Abinopharm and EGT Synbio Announce Successful Clinical Trials

Abinopharm, Inc., a pioneering nutritional and biopharmaceutical firm located in Shelton, Connecticut, has reported significant progress in collaboration with its partner, EGT Synbio from Shanghai, China. The two organizations have successfully completed two human clinical trials assessing the impact of oral L-ergothioneine (Dr.Ergo®) on skin health. Abinopharm is the exclusive distributor and collaborator in the United States for EGT Synbio’s premium product, Dr.Ergo®.

Understanding L-Ergothioneine

L-Ergothioneine, first discovered in 1909 by French chemist Charles Tanret from the ergot fungus (Claviceps purpurea), combines its name from “ergo,” referring to ergot, and “thioneine,” indicating a sulfur-rich compound. Although ergothioneine is present in various plants and animals, it cannot be produced by them and must be obtained from fungi, particularly mushrooms, along with certain bacteria. Humans primarily derive ergothioneine from consuming mushrooms such as shiitake, maitake, and oyster, which contain between 10-13 mg per 100 grams of dry weight.

For many years, the significance of ergothioneine in biological processes was largely unknown until 2005, when Professor Günther Gündemann identified the ergothioneine-specific transporter OCTN1 (SLC22A4), crucial for its accumulation in nearly all human tissues, most notably in the bone marrow, liver, kidneys, red blood cells, brain, eyes, and skin. Leading researcher Professor Barry Halliwell later recognized ergothioneine as one of the most effective natural antioxidants, illustrating its role in reducing oxidative damage and inflammation—key contributors to diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cardiovascular issues, and liver conditions. Research has indicated that ergothioneine possesses high bioavailability, a prolonged half-life in the human body, and offers cellular protection, particularly within mitochondria, which aids in cognitive function, reduces inflammation, and promotes healthy aging.

In 2018, esteemed biochemist Professor Bruce Ames suggested that ergothioneine should be regarded as a “longevity vitamin,” highlighting its importance for long-term health and aging, even though it is not essential for immediate survival. He indicated that insufficient levels of ergothioneine could accelerate aging and elevate the likelihood of chronic diseases.

Benefits of Ergothioneine for Skin Health

Ergothioneine is recognized as a versatile skincare nutrient, celebrated for its antioxidant capabilities, anti-inflammatory properties, and protection against UV damage. It shields skin cell components—including lipids, DNA, and proteins—from oxidative harm and premature aging. Additionally, it helps combat photoaging, characterized by sunspots and collagen degradation, alleviates redness and inflammation related to conditions like acne and eczema, promotes an even skin tone and radiance, bolsters collagen production and skin elasticity, and enhances hydration.

Recent Clinical Findings on Dr.Ergo®

Abinopharm and EGT Synbio have announced the findings from two human clinical trials assessing the skin health benefits of Dr.Ergo® L-ergothioneine. The first trial, an open-label study conducted in China in 2023, involved 19 healthy participants who ingested 25 mg of Dr.Ergo® daily for four weeks. Dermatological evaluations utilizing the VISIA imaging system indicated noticeable improvements in skin pores, wrinkles, UV spots, brown spots, and porphyrins, with no reported adverse effects. These results were published in the American Journal of Biomedical Science & Research.

The second trial, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study in Japan carried out in 2024, included 66 healthy women aged between 35 and 59. Participants were administered 30 mg of Dr.Ergo® daily for eight weeks. Scientific assessments and questionnaires revealed statistically significant enhancements in skin brightness, tone, melanin levels, erythema, gloss, elasticity, and wrinkles. No considerable adverse events were noted, and further details can be found on ClinicalTrials.gov.
