HDFC ERGO and PhonePe Join Forces to Enhance Health Insurance Accessibility in India
In a significant initiative aimed at broadening health insurance access across India, HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company, a prominent player in the private insurance sector, has established a strategic alliance with PhonePe. This collaboration seeks to introduce a cost-effective health insurance solution specifically designed for the demographic often referred to as the ‘Missing Middle’.
As India approaches the landmark of 79 years of independence in 2025, the country’s digital payment landscape has emerged as a crucial element in its economic development. Despite impressive advancements in this area, a concerning statistic persists: approximately 30% of the Indian population, amounting to around 400 million individuals, lack coverage under any government health initiatives or the means to afford comprehensive health insurance. Alarmingly, about 100 million people in this group face the risk of falling into poverty due to healthcare-related expenses. This uninsured population predominantly consists of individuals from lower and middle-income families, including gig economy workers, who are vulnerable to expensive out-of-pocket medical costs.
The collaboration between HDFC ERGO and PhonePe is a pivotal step, as it merges a reputable digital-first insurer with a well-established digital payment platform. By leveraging PhonePe’s digital infrastructure, the ‘Missing Middle’ demographic will gain simplified access to HDFC ERGO’s extensive health insurance offerings at competitive premiums.
In remarks regarding the initiative, Parthanil Ghosh, Executive Director of HDFC ERGO General Insurance, stated, “According to a report by Niti Aayog, about 400 million Indians, termed the ‘Missing Middle’, do not have any health insurance coverage. To address this gap, HDFC ERGO’s Suraksha Sankalp is designed to offer financial assistance through a cashless health insurance plan that encompasses everything from outpatient services to hospitalization. To effectively reach citizens across the nation, we required a strong partner with a broad distribution network in remote areas, and we are pleased to collaborate with PhonePe to achieve this goal of insurance inclusion.”
Vishal Gupta, CEO of PhonePe Insurance Broking Services, added, “Access to inclusive health insurance is essential, and at PhonePe, we are dedicated to positively influencing the financial futures and wellbeing of every Indian. We take pride in partnering with HDFC ERGO to launch this plan targeting the ‘Missing Middle’. The pricing is structured to ensure affordability while providing substantial coverage for individuals in the unorganized sector who can now access health insurance. This initiative aims to facilitate quality healthcare for millions of underserved individuals without the burden of exorbitant premiums. Our objective is to promote insurance uptake throughout the country by offering affordable, digital-first solutions tailored to various socio-economic groups.”
HDFC ERGO’s health insurance plan for the Missing Middle presents a comprehensive coverage option at an accessible premium, featuring a 360-degree medical coverage scope. This plan includes cashless hospitalization across an extensive network of hospitals and financial protection for medical emergencies, such as outpatient consultations, out-of-pocket expenses during hospitalization—including coverage for specified consumables—and personal accident coverage for vector-borne diseases, among others.
Currently, PhonePe is providing this health insurance plan in cities like Hyderabad, Nagpur, and Madurai, with plans to expand to additional locations shortly.
