HDFC ERGO and PhonePe join forces to launch affordable health insurance for India’s ‘Missing Middle’ – Parthanil Ghosh and Vishal Gupta share their vision for inclusive coverage.

HDFC ERGO and PhonePe Join Forces to Enhance Health Insurance Access in India

In a significant effort to broaden health insurance access in India, HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company, a prominent player in the private insurance sector, has announced a strategic collaboration with PhonePe. This partnership aims to introduce a cost-effective health insurance product specifically tailored for the ‘Missing Middle’ demographic in the country. As India approaches the milestone of its 79th year of independence in 2025, the digital payment landscape has emerged as a crucial element in shaping the national economy. Despite the impressive progress in digital transactions, approximately 30% of the Indian population, or around 40 crore individuals, remain without any health insurance, either through government programs or private options. Alarmingly, nearly 10 crore individuals within this demographic face financial hardship, often sliding into poverty due to medical expenses. This uninsured population predominantly includes lower and middle-income groups, as well as workers in the informal sector, including gig economy participants, who are particularly vulnerable to high out-of-pocket health costs.

A Strategic Collaboration for Insurance Accessibility

The alliance between HDFC ERGO and PhonePe is a calculated step that unites a reliable digital insurance provider with a leading digital payment platform. By leveraging PhonePe’s robust digital infrastructure, HDFC ERGO aims to offer the ‘Missing Middle’ in India easier access to comprehensive health insurance options at affordable rates.

Insights from HDFC ERGO Leadership

Parthanil Ghosh, Executive Director of HDFC ERGO General Insurance, remarked on the initiative, stating, “According to the Niti Aayog report, around 40 crore Indians, identified as the ‘Missing Middle’, lack any health insurance coverage. To close this gap, HDFC ERGO’s Suraksha Sankalp is designed to provide financial assistance through its cashless health insurance plan, which encompasses everything from outpatient services to hospitalization. To effectively reach citizens nationwide, we sought a partner with a vast distribution network capable of covering remote areas. We are excited to partner with PhonePe, who has been instrumental in achieving our goal of inclusive insurance.”

PhonePe’s Commitment to Health Insurance Inclusion

Vishal Gupta, CEO of PhonePe Insurance Broking Services, added, “Accessible health insurance is a critical necessity, and at PhonePe, we are dedicated to positively impacting the financial stability and well-being of all Indians. We are thrilled to collaborate with HDFC ERGO to launch this initiative for the ‘Missing Middle’. The pricing is structured to ensure affordability while providing substantial coverage for individuals from the unorganized sector, allowing them access to essential health insurance. Our goal is to enhance insurance uptake across the nation by offering affordable, digital-first solutions that meet the diverse needs of our users.”
